| The white stork is a
symbol of the wetlands. It used to be common in the landscape of southern
Sweden, but since the wetlands were drained and the agriculture became
more efficient the storks disappeared from the region. The last storks
bred here in the 1950's.
In the wetlands project
in Kristianstad (Kristianstads
Vattenrike) we still have vast lakeside meadows, which are regularly
flooded by the Helge å river. We work towards protecting the wetlands
and to create conditions for more species to survive in the area. The White
Storks you see in front of the camera breed in the cage and after breeding
they are released to live on their own in the wild outside of the cage.
It will certainly take
many years, but we hope that the Stork Project will reestablish population
of White Storks in Kristianstad Vattenrike. |
